about

Desert of Reality explores the nature of the mind, matter, and reality. The song takes inspiration from Jean Baudrillard, the French philosopher and sociologist. The title germinated from a Baudrillard quote slipped into the script of the Matrix, a nod to his once radical notions about the blurring of simulation and reality.

lyrics

(Verse)

Sixty miles an hour,
Tried forgetting her name
Spiderweb of freeways
Cobwebs in my brain

There’s a half-life to relationships,
That never went far
Freedom of illusion,
Now I’m caged in this car

Desert of Reality
The truth exists just hard to see
In the Desert of Reality
The truth exists just hard to see

(Chorus)

I’m like a fire,
That’s been left outside
I leap at the walls,
Tear like rust barbed wire

(Verse)

If Joan of Arc cured broken hearts
Devouring their sins
Let's light that spark,
Let her fires begin

Could there be salvation,
Or some meaning in this?
I nearly lost my mind,
I nearly lost my head

Desert of Reality
The truth exists just hard to see
In the Desert of Reality
The truth exists just hard to see

(Chorus)

I’m like a fire,
That’s been left outside
I leap at the walls,
Tear like rust barbed wire

(Verse)

Once upon a time she said,
“Let them eat cake instead!”
Shortly thereafter,
Well, she lost her head

She just smiled as she lit
One last cigarette to share
With the voices in her head
And the serpents in her hair

Desert of Reality
The truth exists just hard to see
In the Desert of Reality
The truth exists just hard to see

(Chorus)

I’m like a fire,
That’s been left outside
I leap at the walls,
Tear like rust barbed wire

(Outro)

I nearly lost my mind,
I nearly lost my head
I will not lose my mind,
And I will not lose my head
