about

Inspired by the Lincolnshire Poacher, a Cold War era shortwave numbers station formerly broadcasting from the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. Shortwave radio listeners named the station after an English folk song used during broadcasts as an interval signal. Believed to be operated by the British Secret Intelligence Service, aka MI6, the Lincolnshire Poacher likely communicated with undercover agents in Eastern Europe, Russia, and across the Middle East by using coded sequences of numbers read by a pleasant, English-accented female voice.

lyrics

Deep in Country
All Alone
A crippling fear
This mission’s blown

She hears the numbers
Every night
And hopes for answers
‘til its light

The poacher’s tune
Preludes broadcast
Of secret codes
Revealed in numbers

(Chorus)

God and Queen and Country too
They do not care at all ‘bout you

Only what you’ll do for them
And keep their secrets very tight

(Verse)

In Secret Code
Your cover’s blown
No Escape
Your on your own

Somewhere in the
Darkest night
Perhaps she’ll live
To see daylight

For time and Space
Might well be bent
But numbers, they
Cannot be broken

(Chorus)

God and Queen and Country too
They do not care at all ‘bout you

Only what you’ll do for them
And keep their secrets very tight

(Verse)

On a lonely farm
Near Avalon
An Ex-Spy lives
He’s all alone

Without a word
He lets her in
He knows the sort of
Mess she’s in

For time and Space
Might well be bent
But numbers, they
Cannot be broken

(Chorus)

God and Queen and Country too
They do not care at all ‘bout you

Only what you’ll do for them
And keep their secrets very tight

(Outro)

Sometimes in the
Darkest nights
Find a way
To see daylight

Sometimes home
is where you’re at
Sometimes home
is where you’re at

Life cannot be
Paint by Numbers

Life cannot be
Paint by Numbers
